Trademark Policy for Batin

Adopted by the board: 9 July 2026. Version 1.0. Norsk versjon: Norsk.

The name Batin and the logo (the crescents around the keyhole) are the association's marks. Our code is and remains free, but the name is a promise: if something says Batin, the association's promises apply. This policy protects that promise.

*Note: the marks are not yet registered with the Norwegian Industrial Property Office. This policy still applies as the association's terms for use of the marks, and registration is planned when finances allow.*

What is protected

The word mark "Batin" used about software, services or the organisation.
The logo and recognisable variants of it.
The domain bat1n.com and names confusingly similar to these.

Use allowed without asking

Reference: referring to Batin in text, teaching, press and research, including critical coverage.
Unmodified redistribution: distributing official, unmodified releases of the association's software under the same name.
Compatibility: stating that something works with Batin software ("compatible with"), as long as it does not imply the association is behind it.
Linking to the association's websites.

Use requiring written permission

The name or logo on modified versions of the software. Forks are welcome (the code is free), but they must use another name and their own artwork.
The name or logo in product names, service names, domain names or organisation names.
Use that could imply partnership, endorsement or origin from the association.
Selling goods carrying the name or logo.

Use that is never allowed

The marks on software that breaches the association's core promises (ads, telemetry, tracking, profiling). A "Batin" build that spies on people is the worst imaginable abuse of the name, and will be met with every means the association has.
Use that misleads about what something is or who is behind it.

Correct use in text

Write "Batin" with a capital B, as a proper noun. Do not distort the logo, do not redraw it, do not change its colours. See the brand folder for logo rules.
